Bhagaban Sri Nityagpal Dev was born on Sunday, 13th Chaitra, 1261 B.S (1776 Sakabda), corresponding to April, 1856 at Brahmamuhurta or the early dawn. Yogacharya Sree Sree Sreemat Swami Jnanananda Abadhuta also known as Sree Sree Nityagopala Deva founded Mahanirban Math, situated at 113 Rashbehari Avenue, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The holy body of Sree Sree Nityagopala Deva rests in the same premises of Mahanirban Math. His life was a series of extraordinary and wonderful incidents. His greatness and grand, eventful career was known to his disciples, followers and devotees only, since he was given to live a scheduled, sequestered and unostentatious life. Even in his boyhood he denied himself of all eathly pleasures and comforts and betook himself, at the age of sixteen, to the blessed life of supreme renunciation on being initiated by Paramahansacharyya Sree Sreemat Swami Brahmananda Adadhuta, a great Sannyasin, who flourished at Hinglaja, a sacred place of the Hindus in Beluchistan towards the middle of the nineteenth century. The Paramahansacharyya Maharaja had four Sannyasin disciples. Our Guru Deva was the youngest and most distinguished of all of them. He has left behind him a large number of religious books, all about his preachings, which owed their origin not so much to the scholastic attainments as to inborn Self-knowledge and Self-realization. Being the preacher of the theory of the Universal Religion – he extended his welcome to the people of all sects and communities and recognized the claims of the stand-points not only of different sects of the Hindus, but also of the Muslims and Christians.

As a great synthesiser he harmonized the sensual diversified views including those of dualists and non-dualists into one whole in which each was given its due. Ramkrishna Paramhansa had great appreciation for Sree Sree Nityagopal because of his thoughts, his principles and his devotion.

The followers believe that Ramkrishna Paramhansa and  Sree Sree Nityagopal are incarnation of Balaram and Krishna.

Mahanirban Math, where Sree Sree Nityagopala Deva rests in peace – one can be at solace within thyself and seek self realization and be in the midst of supreme serenity beyond the hue and cry of daily life.
